Assistant Warden

How would you like to assist with the management of a diverse suite of nature reserves home to scarce and threatened wildlife like water voles, avocets, bearded tits, corn buntings and rare bees? The RSPB at South Essex are seeking a dynamic, resourceful and motivated Assistant Warden to join a reserves team managing an ever evolving 750 hectares of nature reserves on the north side of the Thames estuary. These six diverse nature reserves comprise of, lowland wet grassland, reedbed, fresh and saline lagoons, saltmarsh, mudflats, arable land, scrub, plus rare and nationally important brownfield habitat.

You will join our small but hard working team, this is a great opportunity to work at new and developing reserves. Your role will be incredibly varied and you'll carry out a range of tasks including: delivering habitat management objectives, species surveying and habitat monitoring, supervising contractors, engaging with local stakeholders, carrying out reserves maintenance tasks, assisting with the running of events and managing our fabulous volunteers. This will include use of the reserves tractor and other machinery. We are seeking an individual with experience of practical habitat management, working with and inspiring volunteers, surveying birds and other taxa and working with machinery, as well as good reserves infrastructure and estate maintenance skills.

The applicant should also have good knowledge of natural history especially that of lowland wet grassland species and habitats. They should also be a strong team player with excellent organisational, communication, practical and inter-personal skills. We are a small and hardworking team so are looking for someone to get stuck in to help meet the challenges that face us.

This role is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act. You will be asked to declare both spent and unspent convictions and cautions at offer of employment stage.

Salary starting at

£19,602 - £21,236 per annum
