Field Officer Forest-to Bog Restoration Project

Reference number: A4120120

Location: RSPB Forsinard - Given the travelling time required to attend an interview at RSPB Forsinard, interviews may be carried out by phone if preferred.

The Flow Country is the largest expanse of blanket bog in Europe. It includes high quality bog habitat and associated pools, lochans and lochs. Bog vegetation, dominated by plants like Sphagnum mosses and cottongrass, protects peat soils up to several metres deep, which hold the remains of plants from 1000s of years ago. The area is home to a rich variety of wildlife, including waders such as greenshank and dunlin and water fowl including scoters and divers, and is a very important carbon store, with more carbon being locked up in the Flow Country than in all the UK's forests put together.

This Field Officer post is based at RSPB Forsinard Flows in the Flow Country of Caithness and Sutherland, working on the delivery of the third year of monitoring of the Conservation Science Forest-to-Bog Restoration Project which is researching 4 different methods of restoring areas of non-native conifer plantations to blanket bog. Working with another Field Officer and volunteers, the post holder will carry out the required monitoring which involves hydrological measurement (including manual and automatic logging of water table depth, surface moisture measurement), bird surveys (May and June timed point counts), invertebrate timed visual counts (in May and June, by main groups only) and the detailed vegetation surveys (July - September).

It is a 6-month contract from 1 April to 30 September 2020 with the possibility of an extension.
