Osprey nest activities "unethical and unacceptable"

27 March 2015

A spokesman for RSPB Scotland said: “We regard the current activities around the osprey nest as unethical and unacceptable. Even if they are within the law, they must stop immediately.

“Everyone’s priority must be to allow the birds to return unhindered and nest where they want to. It is then the responsibility of the festival organisers, if permission is granted, to ensure there is no disturbance to the birds. We have made this absolutely clear to the festival organiser, DF Concerts and Events.

“We were fully engaged with the planning process and gave advice in response to the original application. The mitigation plans for osprey described in the original application as advised by RSPB Scotland and Scottish Natural Heritage (ie removing the old nest) have not been delivered.

“We gave our advice in good faith, in response to the information provided, and did not object.  We feel the current situation amounts to a breach of trust. We are frustrated and angry that the whole process has been extremely last minute.  The important thing now is protecting the birds.

“RSPB Scotland will not hesitate to report a disturbance to the police if we believe it has occurred, and we would expect the authorities to conduct a vigorous investigation under any such circumstances.”
