Hi. My husband and I spotted this yesterday afternoon in Oxfordshire. It was on the edge of agricultural land, near a wood. It is clearly juvenile, which make identification a little tricky. It was no more than a foot long and had a round end to its tail, but that is pretty much all I can add to the photo.
With the barred markings on its back and russet tones I would say it's a young Kestrel. Nice photo, you did well to spot it amongst the foliage.
Agree with Tony - nice picture too.
Thank you so much for getting back to me. I did looked at lots of pictures of the smaller raptors, but as it is clearly still young, as a novice I really was struggling. I was lucky enough to spot it going into the hedgerow, so then just had to see if I could spot it in there - a zoom lens on my little point and shoot camera really helped with the photo
