A few weeks ago I was at Attenborough nature reserve, near Nottingham, and someone pointed out a male smew to me. Said he had never seen a male smew there. Today I was at the National Water Sports Centre (only a few miles from Attenborough) and saw a pair of smews. The male is a splendid bird, with dark eye make up and a punk rock hairstyle, and quite exotically delicate markings.
Also saw a wrren, really close up; shovellers; cormorants in breeding plumage; loads and loads of long tailed tits; and all the usual suspects - except herons. Normally HP is crawling with them, but I ahven't seen one there for weeks.
