Female Whitethroat or Reed Warbler

  • IGNORING the text on the web page, can someone confirm the ID of this bird please. I have been told by two different very experience birders that it is a female Whitethroat and by the second birder a Reed Warbler. The bird was about 10 feet above path level - which was above small (depth wise) but lengthy reed bed - see http://tillyweb.biz/gallery/birds2/whitethroat.htm - photos taken on two different days at same location
  • Hi John

For me it's a Reed Warbler

  • This is a Whitethroat

  • I agree with Alan, Reed Warbler for me too. The bill is too long for a Whitethroat. The general shape of the bird, the colouration and the long tail with the rounded end says Reed Warbler.

In some of the photos the bird appears to be singing. The Reed Warbler's continuous rattling song is pretty unmistakable apart from a Sedge Warbler which this isn't.

Nice photos by the way. I must get up to College Lake someday as I'm a member of BBOWT but I've never been.
