EJ

  • I have always felt that we should have a thread for EJ as well as Odin.

My countdown clock says that we might expect her to swoop into Loch Garten 76 days from now. I hjope it has warmed up by then.

  • I'm hoping so too - to see EJ in 76 days as well as warmer weather!  Let's keep everything crossed that both EJ and Odin return safely and pair up again.   They were brilliant together - a great team and wonderful parents.

  • I agree, Birdnuts-  EJ is one of our shining stars, even though she doesn't know it. I have everything crossed that she will return to the LG nest once again this spring.

  • Here is the link on this site to EJ. See  EJ Profile

There is much more about EJ starting on page 22 of "Life of Ospreys" by Roy Dennis

  • Thanks, Tiger.  I was given 'Life of Ospreys' for Christmas so will be studying it for those pages especially.

Yes "Life of Ospreys" usually sits close to me. Such an invaluable resource.

It goes into the who EJ , Henry and OVS saga in great detail.

  • I'll ask Richard & Alice if it would be possible to merge this material into EJ's "biography" page

     http://www.rspb.org.uk/community/blogs/lochgartenospreys/archive/2008/05/11/Questions_2C00_-Answers-and-Information.aspx

Especially for people who don't have Roy's book, it would be useful to have a complete record of her time at LG in one place on the site.

Does anyone know, if any of the chicks she raised with Henry in 2004 & 2006 have been spotted anywhere?

Repairing the broken link in SueC's post. It should now be this one

I have not heard of any of them being spotted. It will be sad if Henry's genes are lost to the osprey world. You might like to read this treat. See http://www.osprey2005.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/LochGarten2004.pdf

  • Hi.

I really hope that EJ makes a safe return in 74 days and can enjoy decent weather and a successful breeding season.

Thanks for the links Tiger and Sue C.  It's fantastic to learn about these brilliantly inspiring birds.

    Paul.

  • The clock on my desk says 72 days now.

As does this one. See http://people.rit.edu/cwcnvs/share/birds/

Here is a bit more about EJ taken from the biography of OVS.

2001: OVS  attracted a new female - EJ - but yet again pine martens robbed the nest of eggs.

2002: OVS , and EJ, successfully raised one young.

2003: OVS  mated with EJ, but she was forced off the nest by a green ringed (unidentified) female - EJ arrives at Loch Garten in June.

  • Dates and times of EJ's return

    2004   Thursday 25th March at 4.05pm

    2005  Tuesday 29th March at  4.45pm

    2006 Saturday 26th March at 2.45pm

    2007  Wednesday 4th April at 4.55pm

    2008 Wednesday 26th March at 2.45pm

    2009 Thursday 25 March at about 5.06pm

  • So there is  a range of about 10 days when her arrival is likely. I suppose a lot depends on the weather en route. Note that she always arrives in the afternoon.

  • Not only does she arrive in the afternoon she tend to arrive just as the osprey centre is closing.

  • looking forward to EJs return (she won't let us down) Think our year does not run from Jan - Jan but from the date the ospreys arrive back at LG !!!!!

  • Up until 1750 the year in England began on March 25th (Lady Day). I think that EJ is still using that calendar.
