Help with sparrow-a-like visitor

This question is answered

Hi all,

Please could i have some help identifying this garden visitor. The one on the right of the feeder. He/she joined a bullfinch on my sunflower seed feeder. Initially i thought they were a sparrow, but they had a pale front with quite well defined thin vertical black stripes. Definitely not a sparrow or a dunnock - plenty of those in garden and this was quite different. I wondered if it was a reed bunting maybe? But its a suburban garden so i thought this might be unusual? Sorry, my photos are crummy as they were taken hastily by hand and through a window and then the feeder also spun round to hide the stripy belly!

Any thoughts much appreciated though!

Thanks,

Neil

  • Hi Neil,  looks like a Common Linnet to me but wait for the experts on this one.

  • Hi Neil I agree with Hazel...well spotted.

  • Yes I agree. Possibly a female as I can't see any red on it. Quite an unusual bird to get in the garden.

  • Thanks Hazy. And Alan and Teejay for consensus. That's interesting - definitely a new one for my garden list. I hadn't thought of a Linnet to be honest as thought that would be a very rare sighting - but good to know. Thanks all for your rapid responses - will add her to my lists!
