Was walking yesterday, heathland in Dorset, Saw about eight birds, larger than thrush and smaller than crow.
Seemed to be Partridge or Grouse?
Didnt look like fieldfare or redwing to me.
They scuttled along and when they flew off it as a low trajectory and they were very vociferous in a potential alarm call (when they saw me).
Bad photos but heavily cropped.
One had fairly distinctive grey neck band and reddish tail feathers.
Many thanks for any expertise.
Many thanks, Alan.
I think Grey Partridge is correct.
Looks like Grey Partridge to me Rich, well spotted.
See if I'm wrong as usual lol.
You're not wrong, Alan, I agree with Grey Partridge. You typically see them in small groups.
Certainly Grey Partridge, not all that easy to find around us even though we have many shoots. Apparently the Red Legged Partridge is more popular with shooting syndicates as they are easier to rear for release on shoots, both are nice birds to see around the field edges.
