Childwall Woods

Childwall Woods
Gt spotted woodpecker - L Bimson

Monday, 30 March 2015

A visit to two well known local woodland areas, namely Black and Childwall Woods. A quiet day perhaps species wise, but one which nevertheless had several highlights. We lost count of the number of wood pigeons, magpies and grey squirrels seen, but this was offset with excellent sightings of nuthatch, finches and gt spotted woodpecker. The latter eventually emerging into view after we spent several minutes listening to its drumming sound trying to locate it. An early sighting in Childwall woods of buzzard lifted our spirits, and later on we observed another well known species, the jay. The long tailed tits seemed to have paired off in readiness for the breeding season.
Total of 19 species seen
Blue tit, great tit, coal tit, long tailed tit, wren, balckbird, treecreeper, magpie, stock dove, buzzard chaffinch, crow, robin, jackdaw, jay, nuthatch, goldfinch, greenfinch and gt spotted woodpecker
