Lydiate, just 12 miles or so from the city centre has a mixed habitat of open farmland, small copses and the Leeds and Liverpool canal, as well as housing. This in turn produced an excellent variety of species

24 bird species seen - Swallow, house sparrow, pied wagtail, heron, yellowhammer, kestrel, collared dove, cormorant, buzzard, herring gull, meadow pipit, moorhen, house martin, wood pigeon, goldfinch, blackbird, starling, greenfinch, magpie, yellow wagtail, mallard, black headed gull, blue tit, dunnock.

5 species of butterflies - Large white, small white,green veined white,red admiral, speckled wood,

Fish - Roach in the canal.
