Long Service Award for dedicated volunteer

Long Service Award for dedicated volunteer

Jenny Barker from Oakworth has been presented with a long service award by the Airedale & Bradford RSPB Local Group Leader, Paul Barrett.
Jenny first volunteered for the group in 1994, and during her time on the committee, took on a variety of roles, including sales organiser and indoor meeting co-ordinator before retiring last year.
"The importance of Jenny's role in this group cannot be overstated," said Paul.
"In the early years of the century, there was a very small committee and Jenny, along with three others, kept the group going. If it wasn't for her efforts during this time, the group would no longer be in existence."
The Airedale and Bradford Group was founded in 1972, making it one of the longest continuously existing local groups in the country.
"Local groups first came into existence fifty years ago in order to promote the work of the RSPB on a local level and are particularly important in areas like ours that do not have RSPB reserves," added Paul. "The Airedale and Bradford Group organise a series of monthly indoor meetings and guided walks between September and May."
The group meets on the second Friday of the month at the Kirkgate Centre in Shipley, the next meeting taking place on 13th September. The talk commences at 7.30pm, entrance fee is £3 and children get in for free. The meetings generally finish at about 9.30pm.
"Our free guided walks usually take place on the weekend following the indoor meeting. Our next walk takes place at the St Ives Estate in Bingley, commencing at 7am on Sunday 5th May."
A field trip the Old Moor RSPB Reserve in South Yorkshire has been organised for Saturday 18th May, departing from Shipley Bus Station at 8am, returning by 6pm. Places are still available (cost £20) - call 01274 582078 to book a place.
