Dowley Gap to Hirst Woods

Dowley Gap to Hirst Woods
Pair of Goosanders, February 2007

A favourite way of walking this route is to start at Dowley Gap and walk along the south side of the canal past the sewage works (which attracts some of the rarities). After crossing the aquaduct that carries the canal over the River Aire, take a right turn and wander through Hirst Woods. At the far end of the woods you will be at Hirst Lock. It wet conditions we walk back to Dowley Gap along the canal. Alternatively, walk down to the river (keeping the nursery on your left), cross over the footbridge and follow the river. You will rejoin the north side of the canal at the aquaduct.

During this walk you should see a variety of woodland and aquatic birds. Rarities seen in the past include a Firecrest, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Mandarin Duck and American Robin.
