Having braced myself for an early start (the offer of a lift helps), I was pleased to find that eleven of us, including our leader, local expert Mark Doveston, had gathered opposite The Malt in Harden by 7am. We set off down Goit Stock Lane, the water of Harden Beck gushing beside us due to all the recent rain, with the hope of seeing dipper & many other species. We were not disappointed. Dipper were present near the lower waterfall & again by the upper waterfall, where they may well have been nesting. Mud & tree roots made the going challenging as we ascended, easier on the far side as we returned through fields & woodland, with lovely views as the air was clear.
Over thirty species were seen, with several more heard tantalisingly close by but not showing themselves.
Birds seen included:- stock dove, robin, dipper, coal tit, jay, nuthatch, blue tit, mallard, great tit, dunnock, herring gull, wood pigeon, jackdaw, blackbird, song thrush, grey wagtail, tree creeper, cormorant, chaffinch, grey heron, magpie, mistle thrush, long-tailed tit, goldfinch, rook, green woodpecker, goldcrest, sparrowhawk. Heard, but not seen- chiffchaff, wren, pheasant, great spotted woodpecker.
