We added another bird to the Ashplorers birds seen list :nuthatch ,we also saw a green woodpecker in flight ,on previous occasions at BFP ,we had heard these birds calling without actually seeing them.The mallard count was up to 41 ,no sign of any ducklings yet. More...

Signs of early spring that we found included a black headed gull in breeding plumage ,the rest of the thirty strong flock still in winter plumage.The 30 pairs of mallards ,will possibly have ducklings when we see them next.Birds were starting to sing ,particularly the smaller passerines such as tits.Will the next survey reveal phenology such as birds carrying nesting materials ,or daffodils in bloom ,perhaps we will hear a cuckoo call or spot some caterpillars or ladybirds?A water rail out in the open was another sign that we are still in winter. More...

The ponds at Carr Vale were mostly frozen , consequently the winter wildfowl were not in as large numbers as usual for this time of year at this site,despite this there were still good numbers of Wigeon.There were plenty of other birds to look at too of course,some highlights were tree sparrows ,willow tits ,winter thrushes and a jay.The green woodpecker that we could hear yaffling was hiding. More...
