Robin sitting in grass

Garden Bird Feeding Survey 2010

This January was the coldest for some years and drew comparisons with the winters of l947 and 1962. From information being collected around the country it would appear that some of our smaller birds might not have been able to find sufficient food to survive. In our survey Wrens were seen in 30 gardens and goldcrests in 6. We also had a few species not seen very often in gardens. There were 50 species seen this year in 73 gardens. Thank you to all who took part.

As in previous years in the full list the percentage of birds/days are shown for the top ten species. The 2009 positions are shown in brackets. New birds seen this year were, brambling, rook, herring gull, water rail, meadow pipit, redpoll, lesser spotted woodpecker, twite, firecrest, linnet and buzzard. Not seen this were Barn Owl, Stonechat and Mallard Duck
