On a sunny morning ten of the group met at the car park at the Fermyn Woods Country Park, which is a partnership between the Forestry Commission and Northampton County Council, and is the county's largest park. Ten group members met at the Welney WWT car park on an overcast morning with the prospect of rain later. As a result of recent rain, the Washes are being transformed from dry grazing pastures to a huge shallow lake to accommodate migrating winter wildfowl, swans and waders. More...

September Field Trip - Lackford Lakes and Lakenheath Fen

A small group of us met at Lackford Lakes car park on a damp autumn morning and we called in to the Visitor Centre before setting of around this Suffolk Wildlife Trust reserve. Swallows were flying high above us as we made our way along the path by the sailing lake. A more quiet, subdued 'pwit, pitychewit, chewit,chewit' call attracted out attention. It was probably a young Cetti's warbler sub song, emanating from the depths of nearby vegetation. As usual we stood quiet for some time trying to locate and see the bird but, in vain! More...

Eleven of us met at Snape Maltings but all but two missed the young cuckoo on a nearby shed. Well, often the "possibilities" in birdwatching are the bait that drives us on! Initially the path took us away from the tidal river Alde through reedbeds where swallows darted after aerial insects. The delightful twittering was soon replaced by urgent alarm calls which caused us to continue searching the sky and, sure enough, a hobby zoomed through, probably after dragonflies rather than the birds. More...
