Geltsdale RSPB reserve
A local upland reserve set in an area of outstanding natural beauty and home to Black grouse, birds of prey and breeding waders. Waymarked trails lead from Howgill. There is a visitor center on the reserve and a new viewing screen by Tindale tarn.
Campfield Marsh RSPB reserve
A variety of habitats including saltmarsh, peatbogs, farmland and flooded grassland that hosts a great range of wildlife. A very nice wooden hide and several viewing screens are provided for visitors.
St Bees Head RSPB reserve
Towering sandstone cliffs are home to the largest seabird colony in north west England. Three viewpoints are provided along the cliff top. Breeding birds include Black Guillemot and Puffin. With superb views out to sea of the Scottish coast and on a clear day the Isle of man.
Mersehead RSPB reserve
With a visitor center and several hides guests are well catered for at this lovely reserve. A home for thousands of wintering Barnacle geese and other wildfowl it is well worth the drive.
Haweswater RSPB reserve
Home to breeding Golden eagles for many years, now just the male survives and displays in an attempt to attract a mate. Other breeding birds include Buzzard, Dipper, Peregrine and Redstart. Eagle viewpoint open 11 am-4pm April-August.
