Coach trip to Lakenheath and Weeting Heath
Whitethroat by Shailesh Kumar Patel

Saturday, 5 July 2014

On Saturday 5 July, I did a trip to Weeting Heath and RSPB Lakenheath Fen with RSPB Central London local group. The weather was cloudy and wet because of the rain, but didn't stop us from birding.

Our first stop was at Weeting Heath to look for the Stone-curlew, which all of us saw. The final birding destination for us was at RSPB Lakenheath Fen. Most of the bird species we saw have young ones.
Here are some of the highlight bird species we saw at both places: - Stone-curlew, Skylark, Little Egret, Hobby, Marsh Harrier, Kestrel, Bearded Tit and Kingfisher.

End of the day I saw two new species for my list: - Stone-curlew and a Ruddy Darter.

Editors comment: We had a number of people on the coach say that these were some of the best views they had ever had of stone curlews. The slightly cooler weather meant that the light was perfect, and heat haze was not a problem. It was possible to see some chicks, although they were elusive!
