Short-eared owl sitting on the ground

Saturday, 23 February 2019

A warm sunny day on the (scenic) Solent. Lots of brent geese feeding, swimming, flying about gently barking. Flocks of waders flying around, many of them lapwing and golden plover, spooked by the peregrine pair we saw hunting and sitting on a concrete block. Red-breasted mergansers on the sea, skylarks, reed buntings and linnets flying around us. At lunch, wigeon, teal, pintail and shelduck on the lagoon; a pair of spoonbill roosting at the back, and a smart spotted redshank showing well beneath us. Good views of Dartford warblers flitting about. Moving on we added snipe and a close rock pipit. 2 distant eider were on the sea, then a pair of massive ravens sitting on the rough pasture and flying about. A large distant brown lump lying on the landfill proved to be a great skua which flew around disturbing the nearby geese; finally we watched a short-eared owl hunting for several minutes. 81 species seen by the group, a great day.
