Swifts have declined in the Chester area by 46% since 1995.

The results of the latest survey of breeding swift numbers in the Chester area confirm a fall of 46% since 1995 when the last comprehensive survey was done. This reflects the national picture and swifts may disappear from parts of Britain in the next 20 years.

In 2016 and 2017, our surveyors, most of whom are RSPB Chester Group members, recorded birds nesting or displaying in and around the city. They found a huge fall in numbers in the city centre which now only has one breeding pair.

If you wish to help the swifts and can spare a couple of hours a week we could do with your help. Could you email us at
