It was a bright but breezy start to our day. The feeders and pool at the visitor centre started our list well with Wendy counting 22 species, including a Black Swan, a pair of which had been on the reserve for a few months. While the photographers went in search of Water Rail, we'd only gone a couple of yards when a pair of Brambling flew into a nearby tree. Their plumage was fresh and smart and they stayed around for everyone to see clearly. More...

The weather wasn't promising with a deluge threatened for 11.30. Nonetheless about eight of us set off but taking the precaution of doing the planned route in reverse to enable a possible peel should the inclement weather arrive. For most of the group of 7 members coming along today, this was their first trip up the M1 to visit the former open-cast coal mine and now new RSPB Reserve at St Aidan's. Due to a problem over access onto the Reserve we met on Astley Lane by the Dragline and walked on site, passing the completed Visitor Centre and parking area which has been closed until the access issues are resolved. More...

It was blowing very hard, when the group met in Chesterfield, so a quick decision was taken to move this month's trip to the RSPB's Frampton Marsh reserve, instead of the Freiston Shore reserve.
