Shellness, Isle of Sheppey, Kent. Sunday, 6th January, 2019

13 of us met up just south of Leysdown-on-Sea, at the eastern end of the Isle of Sheppey, parking beside the seawall. Just a narrow expanse of sand-and-mud beach was left exposed and the North Sea beyond was quite smooth and visibility good. We walked southwards on the seawall to Shellness Village where all but a small splinter group of our party took the muddy path to rejoin the beach beyond the village where it is backed by a slightly elevated bank of sand and seashell. We then halted beside the wartime concrete bunker so as not to disturb the wader-roost further out towards the very point of Shellness. After a late lunch, the afternoon's activity was alongside the minor road leading off south to Harty Ferry stopping at Capel Fleet and finally at the RSPB Raptor Viewpoint where we continued scanning until dusk engulfed us. More...
