In May we held a Croydon Garden Bioblitz Big Day in lieu of the 'Big Croydon Birdwatch', which had to be cancelled due to Covid-19 and of course January will see the RSPB's 'Big Garden Bird Watch'. Some of you may already be taking part in our Winter Lockdown Birdwatch, recording species that you see and hear throughout November. Having run a lockdown bird watch between late March and the end of June, we hope anyone reading this will participate this time. Once again we want to see just how many species are around during the month.As a starter for 10, earlier today I heard about a woodcock (presumably very recently arrived from northern Europe) in a Purley garden. What could you record? A red kite or buzzard? However, just knowing that there are house sparrows and blue tits around is as useful as the headline species. More...

If you weren't a birdwatcher, you'd probably never have heard of Stock Doves, much less noticed them - indeed, I suspect that many Stock Doves get overlooked even by birdwatchers. These birds however have a subtle beauty of their own, and as they present a bit of a challenge it's quite rewarding to find them.
