Beddington Park & Beddington Farmlands - 17 December 2019

Male lapwing in breeding habitat

Saturday, 4 January 2020

We had omitted our annual visit to this site for the past two years because of the extensive disturbance from works being carried out, principally de-silting of the lake & pond and reforming of the islands which are now fully vegetated. There is a Kingfisher bank in the process of construction on one of these islands. 32 species were seen on our amble through the park highlights being 2 grey wagtails chasing around a small ditch adjacent to the path redwing, mistle thrush, goldcrest, stock dove, Egyptian goose, little egret, grey heron, many little grebes and good views of most common species.
From the eastern corner of the Park we were able to access the permissive path that runs along the perimeter of the Beddington Farmlands (more mud). We visited each of the three hides recently inset into the perimeter fence by Viridor as part of the plan to open access to the Farmlands as a country park in 2023. These hides gave us great views of the southern & northern Lakes and to the flooded area which is to become a wet grassland area. 54 species were observed from the hides & along the footpath including 13 species of waterfowl, snipe, lapwing, 5 gull species, 3 finch species and both green & great spotted woodpecker
We managed to avoid the forecast rain until we reached the car park on our return journey!
