Annual BBQ at Loch Kinnordy

Annual BBQ at Loch Kinnordy

Nine members gathered at Loch Kinnordy for our annual BBQ on the same night as the world cup semi-final between England and Croatia (Andreas kept us up to date with the score as he'd set his phone to ping whenever a goal was scored!). The loch was quite quiet - about 10 mute swans, one with four little cygnets, and lots of ducks, mainly mallards but as they were in their eclipse plumage it was not easy to differentiate them - we did manage to pick out one pintail, a tufted duck and some wigeon. Sitting in the quiet of the hide after scoffing our barbecue fare we got good views of two young marsh harriers, one perched for a long time in the tree across the loch. We also heard several water rails calling and a distant tawny owl, while swallows, swifts, sand martins and house martins swooped and dived over the water. A wren seemed to have a nest underneath the Gullery hide as it kept flying out into the grass just in front of us and then diving back in again. Despite some drizzle it was a lovely evening and we all stayed till 10pm when the light started to fade.
