Barbecue at Loch Kinnordy 10 July 2019

Barbecue at Loch Kinnordy 10 July 2019

Despite the forecast of heavy thundery rain showers, we had a lovely warm dry evening for our annual barbecue at Loch Kinnordy. While waiting for the food to cook we had a very sociable time catching up on everyone's holiday sightings and other news. A blackcap and blackbird provided the background music! Afterwards we went down to the Gullery hide where a water rail tantalised us by repeatedly calling and squealing in the reeds right outside the hide. Eventually it came into view but only for a few seconds. Otherwise the loch was quiet and peaceful with a few mallards, mute swans and moorhens floating around in a lazy manner, and two grey herons - one in the reeds and the other perched atop the 'osprey pole'. A reed bunting and sedge warbler were calling continuously and a female marsh harrier caused a bit of excitement by perching in the lone pine for a while before flying off. Later a flock of starling flew in to roost.
We decided to call it a day at around 9 o' clock and headed home, very glad that we'd ignored that forecast!
