There were 87 confirmed incidents of raptor persecution in 2018, according to the RSPB's latest Birdcrime report, published this summer. Victims included buzzards, peregrines, owls and hen harriers. Recently, a marsh harrier was found near Scarborough with a broken wing, caused by shooting. The shotgun pellet was removed and the wing patched up, and the bird was released back into the wild. It was overcast, but fine with a light breeze, when our party of eight arrived at the start of the causeway to Holy Island. The tide was receding, so there was much to keep us occupied as we waited the short while for two more members to join us as prearranged. More...
