May Birds in the Eastbourne Area

One of the highlights was the annual skua passage along the channel, as viewed from Splash Point and Birling Gap. In total, local birdwatchers noted 10 pomarine skuas, 25 arctic skuas and 17 great skuas, or bonxies as they are often known. There were significant numbers of little terns and black terns seen, while gulls included yellow legged, little and Caspian. Although there was a lack of waders reported, other interesting water birds included a great white egret, two garganey and an immature spoonbill.

Some exotic species appeared with a golden oriole showing well (a second oriole was heard but not seen), besides two bee eaters and several red-rumped swallows.
