Wheatear in spring

March Birds in the Eastbourne Area

A red throated diver was seen on several occasions at Arlington Reservoir.

Some of our summer visitors began to return including a wheatear (pictured) on 20th March at Seaford Head, and more surprisingly an early hobby. Other small birds found included up to 13 firecrest and two black redstarts, besides white wagtail and Siberian chiffchaff.

Caspian and Icelandic were unusual members of the gull family observed locally, while a little gull was at the Cuckmere estuary. This site was also host to two spoonbill.

Birds flying along the English Channel included great and Arctic skua, a black necked grebe and three black throated divers.

One unexpected sighting was of a quail at the Ouse Estuary Project, east of Newhaven.
