Saturday Walks 2015: Cuckmere Valley

Saturday, 17 January 2015

Michael Light led a group of 15 walkers along the Cuckmere Valley upstream from Exceat. Very muddy conditions confined the walkers close to the river, the margins of which were flooded, but this did not stop them from seeing plenty of birds until gathering snow clouds forced a retreat.

A greenshank was perhaps the best sighting; there were also numerous redshank. Ducks included lots of wigeon, besides teal, mallard, shelduck and pochard. Besides the expected Canada and greylag geese, the group also found brent and bar-headed goose. Other water birds included little grebe and grey heron, although little egret was a surprising absentee. The traditional winter thrush family birds, redwing and fieldfare, were also seen along with various garden birds.
