Butts Brow

Willow warbler

Wednesday, 12 August 2015

After early morning rain, the group experienced dull, overcast weather on our downland walk around Butts Brow, with a freshening easterly wind. Traditionally early August is a quiet time for bird watching, and so it proved with only nine species seen. There were summer visitors, namely willow warbler, whitethroat and swallow. There were also three crow species, and the only raptor was a kestrel.

On the plus side it was a good walk for butterflies. We saw Meadow Brown, Ringlet, Chalkhill Blue, Common Blue, Marbled White, Wall Brown, Small Skipper, Silver-Blue Skipper, Small Blue and Gatekeeper.
