Wilmington to Folkington and back

Goldfinch on seed feeder

Saturday, 17 October 2015

I took five members on this autumn stroll along the bridleway and the old drove road, then along the bottom of the Long Man of Wilmington.

The small birds were not keen to show themselves, but we managed to see meadow pipit, stonechat, linnet, goldfinch and mistle thrush. We came across some buzzards which totalled seven after 5 minutes of watching them.

There were some lovely autumn colours around with glimpses of sun on the leaves and even a red admiral butterfly made an appearance as well as a kestrel. When walking by the bottom of the Long Man, we saw a buzzard hovering for more than 10 minutes on the sky line. It did not have its wings in the V shape, more an M shape, until a magpie pushed it down a yard, then it hovered again, none of us had seen this display before, then after 15 minutes it went down.
