Rickney to Horse Eye

Male lapwing in breeding habitat

Saturday, 21 November 2015

We picked the first day of winter for this stroll along the road where we had snow and sleet showers, as well as a force 8 gale with a temperature of 1.5 degrees Celsius. However despite this, including myself, 4 hardy souls braved the elements.

We decided to do some birdwatching from the cars first until we could see a break in the weather and the sun came out. There were fieldfare, redwing and great spotted woodpecker along with the common garden birds. The walk was fine when we had the trees and shrubs to shelter us, but then we felt the wind, so turned around and headed back with a rainbow behind us. 25 species of birds were seen in total, the best being a flock of lapwing flying with the sun on them.
