Saturday Walk: Tidemills

Saturday, 20 February 2016

14 members joined me on a windy but dry morning. The walk was around the site of the old Tidemills and out to the east pier of Newhaven Harbour and back.

There were a few small birds in the bushes on the way down, mainly tits and finches, a skylark was singing and seen on the shingle bank by the creek. A pair of stonechat were flitting about by the pier as most of us started to walk along it with the wind blowing straight at us. We managed to see 15 or so purple sandpipers (pictured), three turnstones and a fulmar on the west cliff. It was nice to get back to the wall out of the wind. On the way back we came across a kestrel on the lamppost as well as seeing greenfinches, meadow pipit and the skylark again. In all we saw over 25 species of birds.
