Saturday Walk: Sharnfold Farm

Male blackcap in hawthorn bush

Saturday, 16 April 2016

Ten members of the group came along on this gentle walk around the farm's nature trail, trying to identify birds by their song. We saw swallows and a flock of 12 or more house sparrows in the farmyard, with a buzzard and peregrine flying over. Listening for bird songs we heard blackcap (pictured), chiffchaff, woodpeckers, nuthatch and all the common garden birds. One bird song made us work hard to find out what it was as it sounded like an old phone tone. After quite a while we saw a starling calling like a phone. In all we saw or heard 25 species. Then we went back to the café for tea and cake on the patio when it started to rain.
