Saturday Walk: Around Shinewater

Collared dove sitting in grass

Saturday, 18 November 2017

The day started bright and sunny, but by the time we had assembled at Ballantyne's Gym, the clouds were already gathering in the distance. Fourteen of us set off, led by Michael Light, for the amble around Shinewater in good spirits as we worked our way around the east side of the site.

Sightings were recorded of blackbird, chiffchaff, crow, collared dove (pictured), goldfinch, goldcrest, grey heron, kestrel, magpie, feral pigeon, wood pigeon, house sparrow, starling, stonechat, blue, great and long-tailed tit, Cetti's warbler, great spotted woodpecker and wren. We also heard a green woodpecker.

Whilst on and around the water we found coot, cormorant, tufted duck, gadwall, great crested grebe, black-headed and herring gull, mallard, moorhen, shoveler, snipe, mute swan, teal and wigeon.

Highlights of the morning were the sightings of Cetti's warbler and snipe, with a beautiful view of a heron swooping low and gracefully before settling down for a spot of fishing. A quite respectable total of 35 species was observed and we returned to our cars along the west side of the water just in time as the weather decided to worsen and the first of the days showers started.
