Wednesday Walk: Cuckoo Trail - North from Polegate

Male snipe singing in the rain

Wednesday, 13 March 2019

Eleven members set off from School Lane, Polegate heading north up the Cuckoo Trail with a small diversion along a nearby footpath bordering open fields. The morning was decidedly breezy with cloud and sunny intervals.

We observed 26 species, blackbird, buzzard, chaffinch, crow, dunnock, goldfinch, black headed gull, herring gull, jackdaw, magpie, nuthatch, wood pigeon, redwing, robin, rook, skylark, snipe (pictured), house sparrow, starling, song thrush, blue, coal, great and long tailed tits, pied wagtail and wren. We also heard a greenfinch. Undoubtedly the highlights for us was the group of five snipe in a field and (at least) fourteen redwings on farmland. A very enjoyable morning.
