Group Outing - Lammermuirs

Location: Lammermuirs

An annual favourite at this time of year, with ring ouzel usually seen as well as other moorland birds and the chance of at least hearing and possibly seeing cuckoo.
Part of the walking will be on a rough track, and being April, the weather can be changeable, so come prepared. Meet in the square at Gifford.

Group Outing - River Tyne from East Linton

Location: River Tyne from East Linton

We shall walk up the Tyne from East Linton to Hailes Castle. We will hopefully see dipper and grey wagtail on the river and yellowhammer, warblers and other small birds in the surrounding land. The path has one or two short sections of climbing.
Take the A1 from Edinburgh. Leave the A1 at the second turn off for Haddington, taking the A199 for East Linton. Park in Station Road (B1407) in East Linton. Park before the road bends left under the railway bridge. The footpath for Hailes Castle is signposted on the right. Meet here.

Group Outing - Penicuik House

Location: Penicuik House

This estate has open land, wooded areas and ponds, so we should see a wide variety of species with spring migrants and resident birds. From the west, exit the Edinburgh bypass at the Lothianburn junction, south on the A702. At Hillend take the right-hand fork of three and follow this to Flottersone, then a couple of miles later take the second left turn, signposted Penicuik 2 miles. At the T-junction at the end of this road, the car park is immediately opposite on the A766. From the east, exit the bypass at Straiton, south on the A701 to Penicuik. Before the town centre, turn right onto A766 to Carlisle, for about one mile. The car park is on the left.

Group Outing - Bavelaw and Pentlands

A summer evening walk up into the Pentlands to look for upland birds. Turn off the A70 Lanark Road at Balerno onto Bridge Road.Turn left after the school onto Bavelaw Green. Continue south for about 2 miles to the Threipmuir (Red Moss) car park.

Group Outing - St Abb's Head

Location: St Abb's Head

A cliff top walk to see how successful the nesting seabirds are this year and get excellent views of the gannets at the Bass Rock. Always a good chance of seeing peregrines and we'll also look for warblers beside the Mire Loch. From the A1 south of Dunbar turn left on the A1107 to Coldingham, then turn left on the B6438 to St Abbs, and just before the village fork left to the NTS car park. Since this is a long journey, people might wish to organise a car share with a friend.

Thorntonloch has coastal habitat, rough ground and scrub, providing the opportunity to see a variety of birds. The public path round the power station gives good vantage points for sea-viewing. Take the A1 south. Thorntonloch is signposted left a few hundred yards past the power station turn off. Park by the caravan site.

Volunteering at Aberlady

Location: Aberlady Bay LNR

Group members join with the regular 'Aberlady Volunteers' to carry out vital conservation work on the reserve. This time we will be helping with a plant survey, an essential activity which helps the ranger monitor the biodiversity of the reserve to ensure conservation activities are correctly targeted.

Today we will join in a survey of important flora on the Reserve.

Group members will join with the regular 'Aberlady Volunteers' to do some conservation work at the reserve. This time it will be reedmace removal, an essential activity to keep this species under control so that the biodiversity of the reserve can flourish.

This activity will involve pulling and diggin out this plant from the wader scrape.

Group Outing - Barns Ness and Whitesands

Location: Barns Ness and Whitesands

With some luck and an easterly wind, we should see some newly arrived migrants. Take the A1 past Dunbar, straight past the roundabout for ASDA, turn left onto A1087 (signed for Dunbar and the cement works). Go straight on at the small roundabout, then first right (signed Whitesands and Barns Ness). Follow this single track road past the quarry and Whitesands toilets. Go downhill, park on the right 300 metres before the lighthouse.

Group Outing - Tentsmuir from Tayport

Location: Tentsmuir from Tayport

From Tayport we'll look for waders, seaduck and gulls while walking along the south side of the Tay estuary to Tentsmuir Point, then back through the forest looking for woodland species; 4 miles on sandy paths and forest roads. Depending on timing we may check out 1 or 2 water bodies on the drive back. From the M90 north take A91 at junction 8 through Cupar then after Dairsie turn left onto A914. At St. Michael's take B945 to Tayport then after town sign take 6th on right, Maitland St. then right at mini roundabout onto Nelson St. Follow onto Shanwell Road then after left hand bend turn left for Links Road North car park.
