Coach outing to Maidens Harbour and RSPB Lochwinnoch

Location: Coach outing to Maidens Harbour and RSPB Lochwinnoch

Maidens Harbour, with its rocky shore, coastal mudflats, beach and sea, should give us the opportunity to view seabirds and waders, while the rough ground and scrub behind the harbour will offer different types of birds. We will then drive to RSPB Lochwinnoch for the afternoon.

RSPB Lochwinnoch is a wetland Reserve with broadleaved woodland, open water, marshy areas and some floating fen so, from the trails and hides, we should get different species from our morning's observations. Work is still underway to renaturalise the hydrological systems of the Reserve by reconnecting the burns currently diverted around the Barr Loch, and restoring the wetland system to what it would have been a century ago, before agricultural pressures changed the landscape. The Visitor Centre has a ground-level viewing area and a viewing tower offering a panoramic vista. The Centre also has a shop and a tea/coffee machine, but no café. The paths may be muddy so stout footwear and warm, waterproof clothing are recommended. Don't forget your optics, and a packed lunch.

Departure is at 8.30 am, at the latest, from West Register House, Charlotte Square, or at 8.40 am on the Glasgow Road, west of Drum Brae Roundabout, at the bus stop near to the Shell Filling Station. Please clearly state your uplift point on the booking form. We aim to be back to Charlotte Square by approx. 6 pm. Drop-off on the return will only be at these same two points.
