Coach Outing - Ken Dee Marshes

Location: Ken Dee Marshes

The Group's last visit to Ken Dee Marshes, just north of Castle Douglas, was in 2013 and, as it is an RSPB Nature Reserve, we should fly the flag!

The RSPB lease a strip of land on the south-western side of Loch Ken from the Hensol Estate, and it is an area of woodland with 2 hides overlooking the loch with its reed beds, marsh and wet grassland. The "Goose Viewpoint" is the usual vantage point for seeing Greenland white-fronted geese, a speciality of Ken Dee, and other geese that might be about. The other Ken Dee star species is the uncommon and elusive willow tit.

The walk from the car park to the further hide ("Old Hide") is 1.5 miles (2.5 km), the paths will be wet and muddy so sturdy and waterproof footwear is advisable, as is warm and waterproof clothing. Don't forget your packed lunch and optics. As there are no visitor facilities at the Reserve we will have comfort stops at Castle Douglas on each leg of the journey. When we leave the Reserve we will take the route through Laurieston as red kites are often seen in this area.

Group Outing - Low Valleyfield

Location: Low Valleyfield

The ash lagoons and mudflats of the Torry Bay LNR give us the opportunity to see wildfowl, waders and also a variety of woodland birds and wildlife, due to its managed biodiversity. Exit the M90 travelling north at Junction 1 for Rosyth, and follow the A985 for about five miles until you reach the Cairneyhill roundabout. Take the first exit onto the B9037 to Torryburn. Pass through Torryburn and New Mills, and take a road on the left, the Fife Coast route, signed to Culross and Forth View Ind. Estate. The Reserve car park is half a mile on the left.

Coach Outing - Hauxley NWT Reserve

Location: Hauxley NWT Reserve

Hauxley Reserve is run by the Northumberland Wildlife Trust and is situated at the north end of Druridge Bay, 1˝ miles south of Amble. It is a new destination for our Group - we had hoped to visit in April 2017 but had to change our plans as the building work on the Visitor Centre was behind schedule. However, the Centre was opened by Simon King OBE on 23 June 2017 and has had great reviews. The previous centre, a basic, wooden building, was burned down, but with grants from the National and Heritage Lottery Funds, the Reserve has risen from the ashes, extensively remodelled and extended, with its new, eco-friendly Visitor Centre.

Hauxley has 2 freshwater lagoons with islands, reed beds, 5 hides and a small wood providing a range of habitats placed between farmland to the west and dunes and the North Sea to the east. Water levels can be adjusted at times of migration, leaving areas of mud to encourage waders, and it is estimated that 60+ species of bird now breed on or around the Reserve. It is a really good birding destination, and many of Northumberland's rarities have been recorded here. We intend to spend the morning on the Reserve, following the circular path and visiting the hides, and also taking the path through the woodland and scrub out to the sand dunes.

In the afternoon we will travel the 3 miles to East Chevington where after opencast restoration in 2003 the site of 2 large lakes with fringing reed beds and grassland were passed to the NWT who also own the farmland to the west of the pools. Again, the varied habitats should offer us a good range of birding, and a short walk over the dunes gives access to the middle of Druridge Bay for shore- and seabirds. We will call in at the Visitor Centre at Hauxley again before setting off home.

There is a café serving hot and cold drinks, scones and cakes at the Centre as well as toilet facilities. The paths are good but, as always be prepared for the changeable weather of Spring. Sturdy footwear is recommended as we will be on sand as well as paths. Don't forget your packed lunch and optics.
