Places to see birds

Aberlady Bay

Estuary area with large mud flats and salt marsh, sand dunes and beach.

Excellent for its year-round range of waders including godwit, knot, purple sandpiper, sanderling, ringed plover. Attracts large flocks of geese in the late Autumn and early Winter. In the winter sea ducks and divers are seen very regularly from the beach, and there are good chances of seeing barn owl and short-eared owl hunting over the fields near to the golf course. Gullane Point provides an excellent base for sea watching during the Autumn migration period. A good site for warblers in the spring and summer, all common warbler species can be seen including blackcap and whitethroat, also holds a small number of rarer species such as grasshopper warbler.

Accessible on the North Berwick bus from St. Andrews Square bus station. Alight at Wooden bridge, Aberlady.
