Gosford Estate and Longniddry Bents

Gosford Estate and Longniddry Bents
Goldcrest - Brian Robertson

Saturday, 3 December 2016

It was a very calm but overcast morning as our group of 20+ gathered at the small car park at the entrance to the Gosford Estate. The birdwatching started immediately with a variety of birds around in the fields and trees including yellowhammer and for some, a passing crossbill. The track to, and the carpark at the Bothy shop provided us with a good variety of passerines. Once we dragged ourselves away from this hotspot on the walk into the estate we had a good view of a great spotted woodpecker perched at the top of an old tree, before continuing round by the mausoleum, adding nuthatch, a full set of thrushes, several tit species and goldcrest to the day's list. The ponds gave us a few ducks, little grebe and a small flock of greylag geese with a one-eyed pinkfoot amongst them.

We then headed to Ferny Ness at Longniddry Bents for lunch followed by an afternoon's seawatching. The very calm conditions were ideal with birds visible a long way out. We could see several waders, sea ducks including long tailed, eiders and large but distant flocks of goldeneye and both scoters. A couple of winter guillemots, great crested and Slavonian grebes were also present. Even the best conditions don't last and eventually failing light brought an excellent day to an end.
