Wednesday, 26 February 2020

Despite the soggy conditions, we managed to see over 50 species including a couple of rather special ones. More...

Such was the appeal that an astonishing 25 members turned out for this event with almost a third making their first outing of the year with us. Thankfully the recent poor weather was behind us and, although it was overcast, conditions were good. More...

Adult bittern wading in reedbed at Lee Valley Country Park

Thursday, 14 March 2019

Dodging the ponies 17 of us arrived at Acres Down in the New Forest on a sun filled day with clear skies and perfect visibility. After a short walk to the raptor viewing area we settled down to await events. Kept company by stonechats and meadow pipits we did not have long to wait to see the first goshawk, which was soon followed by a second sighting, in a completely different direction.Although they were at some distance, excellent views were obtained of both goshawks perching at rest and flying. Later a short walk failed to find the crossbills and hawfinches which had been reported earlier. Moving on to Blashford lakes took only 25 minutes or so. This centre has half a dozen different lakes and various hides and we were able to get excellent close views of bittern, siskin, redpoll, marsh harrier and a host of ducks and eventually firecrest. Water rail was not seen by us but are frequently observed. It is definitely worth visiting and we all headed home in the late afternoon very content with a great day's birding having seen 50 or so species. Alastair Cameron More...

Marsh Harrier (female), close up of head

Monday, 21 January 2019

The Isle of Sheppey has to be one of the most uninviting places to visit in January; the weather tends to be bitterly cold and the terrain vast and exposed with very few places to shelter from the elements. However, it also happens to be a prime location and the prime time to see short-eared owls and hen harriers. That is why 12 of us (11 members + Andrew, our guest for the day) braved the conditions and we were rewarded with a thoroughly good day out. More...
