The best times to visit are mid April to late May and late June to early September. Wader migration should be at its peak. The pool is best watched at high tide.
Heron, Cormorant, Kestrel, Sparrowhawk and Black-headed Gull are present all year. Mallard, Coot, Moorhen and Lapwing breed. Sedge Warbler and Reed Buntings in scrub. Gadwall, Teal, Shoveler and Red-breasted Merganser occur on passage. The area is best noted for migrant waders including occasional rarities. In winter Little Grebe, Tufted Duck, Goldeneye and Goosander are regularly seen.
