It totals over 1400 acres with over 400 being freshwater scrapes and all this bordering onto the Northern side of The Wash. We took the path to the 360 hide and followed on with a walk round 'The Wash Trail'. This is a good site and only just a little over 2 hours from Harrogate, so well worth a visit. We adjourned at about 17.00 and went to our Hotel, The Heacham Manor near Hunstanton. More...

Residential Trip to Rutland Water 5-7 April 2017

Thursday, 13 April 2017

This year our trip was to Rutland Water in early April, and 12 members met up at the Egleton Visitor Centre at lunchtime on Wednesday the 5th. With the first hurdle overcome the next was to convince the less than happy or helpful member of staff that we were a Group and that we had booked our visit. Ann argued our case forcibly and ought to consider a career as a Brexit negotiator. More...

Field Trip to Fairburn Ings

Saturday, 25 March 2017

I must be a curmudgeonly old devil, but the weather forecasters who say that "today was the hottest day of the year" annoy me. As we move away from mid-winter it is conceivable that every day is the hottest so far. So what! More...

little egret, wading, water

Saturday, 26 November 2016

Our last outdoor meeting of the year was to Pugneys Country Park on the outskirts of Wakefield. The weather was not kind to us as we left Harrogate in bright sunlight and arrived to a site covered in fog. There were reports on Friday that the reserve had a Slavonian Grebe and a long Tailed Duck. As it turned out, the grebe had moved on, but we were treated to exceptional views of the duck which obligingly swam across the lake to pose in front of us for photographs. More...

Male snipe singing in the rain

Saturday, 24 September 2016

Nine members met on the Country Park car park at Filey. It was a dry and warm morning but very windy, in fact the wind was probably gale force. We walked from the car park to the end of the Brigg, checking the bushes for migrants as there had been a recent influx of Yellow browed Warblers right along the East coast and a check on the log at the Cafe confirmed that 34 of these birds had been seen in the area 3 days earlier, but alas it was too windy for any self respecting warbler to show. More...

Barn owl looking over its shoulder

Wednesday, 24 August 2016

The day had been pleasantly warm, and the evening despite promising rain remained good, which was just as well for the 27 members and friends who turned up at the YWT Staveley Reserve. This was the best turnout for quite a few years and severely tested both the capacity of the car park and our parking skills. Nevertheless after a brief hiatus we were all ready to set off, when we were given the news that an Osprey had passed through about one hour previously. More...

Goldfinch on seed feeder

Sunday, 24 April 2016

Early in the week the weather was promising to make this a sun-kissed, Spring day, ideally suited to a trip over to this North West coastal region. However, typical of 2016, by Saturday night the forecast was not looking as rosy and we were expecting some snow showers. The reality was that it was a reasonable day, with quite a bit of sunshine only one significant shower (cue for lunch in Lillian's Hide) and though cold it could have been a lot worse. More...

Saturday, 19 March 2016

A good and wise friend, a true countryman, once told me of the old adage 'Day lengthens: cold strengthens'. and never was it truer than on this day. So, a cold morning in early Spring saw 13 members gather at this RSPB reserve. More...
