Report on Somerset Levels weekend 10 -12th March 2017

HIGHLIGHTS SUMMARY

We witnessed a series of wonderful spectacles over the 3 day trip. Thousands of starlings foraged the surrounding fields waiting for the signal to join the murmuration. A stack of 12 common buzzards circled on thermals next to the murmuration awaiting a chance to predate one of their number. Significant sightings of hundreds of mute swans carpeted their favourite fields. Up to a dozen booming bitterns echoed around Ham Wall and Shapwick Moor and we had our best ever close views of glossy ibis just 50yds away. There were as many great white as little egrets on the reserves and among the many marsh harriers 2 pairs did their talon dance. Not to be outdone a pair of great crested grebes performed their synchronized dance and consummated their relationship - " blink and you would have missed it". The return of summer migrants included sand martins, chiffchaff and reed warbler. The explosive sounds of the cettis warblers were commonplace around all the reserves although they were elusive to be seen and we only caught sight of a couple of them.
