Thames Barge Trip along the Blackwater

This outing was a day's 'voyage' on a Thames sailing barge out of Maldon, Essex and along the Blackwater. Despite the very early start, the trip was much enjoyed by 12 members, who benefited from great food and unexpected warm sunny conditions, perfect for a sail. Good views of waders were seen whilst the barge was anchored for lunch, and waiting for the tide to turn. Notably, a large flock of avocets was seen, which not so long ago was a rare species in the UK. Overall, some 50 species of bird were observed during the day, along with common seal. Perhaps the highlight for some was the opportunity to take the helm of the barge!
