New Year Bird Count

New Year Bird Count

Six teams scoured the highlands in less than ideal conditions. Occasional showers and very poor light hampered our efforts. The total number of species found was lower than recent years. A total of 80 species were seen with the winning team recording 61. Highlights of the day were a drake American Wigeon and a Black-tailed Godwit at Udale Bay. Long-tailed Ducks, Common Scoter and Red-breasted Merganser were seen off Rosemarkie beach. passerines included Jay, Fieldfare and Redwing. Despite the adverse conditions and relative scarcity of birds all who took part enjoyed the day.
