Christmas Birding and Lunch

Whooper & Bewick's swans feeding in ploughed field

Sunday, 13 December 2009

The first stop was by Dalmore distillery where amongst several duck species was a flock of 10 Shoveler, an uncommon bird in this part of the country. Waders present were Oystercatcher, Curlew, Redshank, Turnstone, Dunlin, Ringed Plover and a single Greenshank. A short stop at Kildary Lochan produced little other than Coot and Mute Swan. We then moved on to the hide at Nigg Bay, passing a flock of almost 50 Whooper Swans and Greylag Geese. At the hide new species were Pintail and Golden Plover. The final stop was at Nigg Ferry where there were many Fieldfares in the Sea Buckthorn. On the sea were Eiders, Long-tailed Ducks, Shags and a Black Guillemot.
After a cold morning's birding we all enjoyed an excellent soup and sandwich lunch at the Cottage Bar in Maryburgh. A total of 58 species were seen and three members shared the sweep winnings.
