Christmas Birding

Whooper & Bewick's swans feeding in ploughed field

Sunday, 13 December 2009

First stop was by Dalmore distillery where a nice group of 10 shoveler were seen along with teal, mallard, and wigeon. Waders included oystercatcher, lapwing, redshank, curlew, turnstone, dunlin and a single greenshank. A short visit to Kildary Loch produced only mute swan and coot. From there we went to the hide at Nigg Bay, stopping on the way to look at a flock of greylag geese and over 40 whooper swans. Viewing from the hide was difficult as the windows were frosted over and the tide was out but pintail, shelduck and golden plover were added to the day-list. On the sea at Nigg ferry were eider, long-tailed duck and a black guillemot. Also a flock of fieldfare were feeding in the sea buckthorn bushes.
After a cold morning we all enjoyed an excellent soup and sandwich lunch at the Cottage Bar in Maryburgh. A total of 58 species were seen and 3 members shared the winnings of the sweep.
