In search of Sea Ducks

Dark-bellied brent goose on water at Hayling Island

Thursday, 24 February 2011

With the Redshanks and Curlews were a few Lapwings. Moving along to Nairn we found the now regular flock of wintering Pale-bellied Brent Geese, several Eiders Goldeneyes and a few Red-breasted Mergansers. By the harbour among the flock of Knot were a small number of Dunlin and Bar-tailed Godwits. At Roseisle we added Velvet and Common Scoter to the list. In the pine woods Crossbills were heard but not seen. Our next stop was at Burghhead to search for the long-staying King Eider which proved elusive - a couple of Red-throated Divers was little consolation. The final destination was at Lossiemouth where there were many Teal and Wigeon. Amongst the large flock of gulls a second winter Iceland Gull was found by one keen-eyed birder.
